I will copy your right!

Janet wanted me to take a few minutes to blog about
an interesting situation which occurred last week.

It is odd how serendipitous life can be.

Apparently Janet and Steven Colbert's minds have meld into one
because both have "copyright" swirling amidst their brain matter.

A "fan" of Janet's work emailed wondering if she could purchase prints
of AC/DC and Metallica.

Janet's new assistant, tasked with weeding through over a hundred emails
a day, and unschooled in the laws of copyright,
replied "yes" thinking it was merely another general print pricing request.

Luckily, Janet caught the mistake, promptly gave the staff a hour
in the corner while educating us on horrors of joint copyright
ownership/infringement, then sent out another email to the "fan"
with the correct response.

What you may ask is the correct response to: "may I purchase prints
from your shows?"

A resounding NO!

Why? Because no photojournalist can EVER resell prints of those whom rock
(or any other commercial figure who controls the usage of their image)
without permission of the artist/entertainer while thus
sharing proceeds from all sales with the owner.

Steven Colbert with his brilliant legal eagle brother, Ed
debate the current issue in this all too informative clip.

Pay special attention to the last two minutes which touches on
the precise reason why it is oh so wrong.
